Abstract:
At the end of the last millennium, a number of high profile companies were widely scrutinized for substandard working conditions in their supply chains. In response to criticism of their reputations as socially responsible companies, many of them had adopted codes of conduct and started to use social audit as an implementation mechanism. These voluntarily initiatives, under the umbrella of ''Corporate social responsibility'' (CSR), were met with little enthusiasm from labour rights activists who suspected that these initiatives were adopted mainly to deceive the public. Others accepted it but questioned its effectiveness and feared that social audits were merely carried out as a form of risk assessment. These are the sorts of issues examined in this paper: the first chapter, 'Referential of CSR'', explores the most important tools that have emerged in this area (universal norms, certification standards, labels, etc.) and offers an analysis of how the combination of these new tools is beginning to provide companies with a process infrastructure of their ethical supply chain. The second chapter highlights the scope and methodology of social audit and evaluates its credibility and efficiency as a current mechanism to promote CSR and an ethical supply chain. Recommendations for more improvements are provided whenever it is necessary. The analysis of social audit in this paper is based for the most part on the professional experience of the author as a social compliance consultant. The findings are then compared with the different literatures and investigations undertaken in this field. Key words: CSR, social audit, supply chain, code of conduct, SA8000, ILO Conventions.
