The First Mediterranean Water Forum
The First Mediterranean Water Forum will be jointly organized by the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME) and the State Secretariat in charge of Water and Environment of Morocco, and will take place in Marrakech (Morocco) on 19-20 December 2011.
This event has two main components: the preparation of the Mediterranean cross-continental process for the 6th World Water Forum, and the effective setting up of the Mediterranean Water Forum which, beyond its first edition, should be established in a permanent manner so as to carry the voice of the Mediterranean water community.
A Steering Committee has been set-up to prepare this event and the Mediterranean process of the WWF6. At the 1st Mediterranean Water Forum, discussions will be organised around the 4 priorities defined for the WWF6 and for launching the Mediterranean Water Forum. Side events will also be organised around thematic projects and initiatives such as the decision support system STRATEAU for water and territorial management. The Mediterranean Water Forum aims to become a permanent platform for the Mediterranean water community, it is expected to establish some basic principles accepted by all stakeholders. It aims also to bring together around targeted themes the main stakeholders of the Water Community in the Mediterranean, namely: decision-making bodies, local and regional authorities, parliamentarians, donors, representatives of the private sector and experts, regional networks, other civil society stakeholders and State representatives.
On the other hand, and in the framework of this event, EMWIS decided to organize a side-event on Tuesday 20 December at 15h30 to discuss about the project focusing on “strengthening the coordination and the development of National Water Information Systems harmonized at the Mediterranean level, towards a shared Mediterranean water information system”. This proposal is the result of the activities EMWIS have been carried out with all Mediterranean countries since 2005. This side event will be a good opportunity to validate Mediterranean countries commitment to this approach and to discuss the practical arrangements for financing national and regional activities in view of a potential announcement of that commitment at the 6th World Water Forum, next March. $
